Great success for team Bulgaria at the Special Olympics World Games

The Special Olympics World Games 2015 was held in Los Angeles July 26 – August 2, 2015.  165 countries, including Bulgaria, were represented in 25 different sports held at venues throughout the L.A. area.  More than 6,500 athletes came to participate, including Team Bulgaria.

The Special Olympics, created by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, are held year round in countries throughout the globe, however the World Games are held every two years.  They began in 1968, and alternate between summer and winter games.  The goal of the World Games is “to showcase the skills and accomplishments of people with intellectual disabilities on a global stage.”  The 2017 World Games (winter) will be held in Austria.

The Opening Ceremony on July 26th took place at the Los Angeles Municipal Coliseum.  More than 60,000 spectators filled the stands.  Entertainment included Stevie Wonder, Avril Levigne, Vanessa Williams, Ed Harris, and more.

Most delegations arrived on Tuesday July 22, and spent 4 nights with a host city.  The various host cities provided housing, meals, and organized activities to entertain the visiting athletes, their families, and their coaches and staff.  On Saturday, July 26, the athletes moved into the dorms for the duration of competition at both University of Southern California and the University of California Los Angeles.  Festivals and entertainment were held daily on both campuses.

The Bulgarian delegation participated in ten of the twenty-five different sports.  Here are the final results for the Team Bulgaria:
